Hope VI "Bridges of Opportunity" Urban Redevelopment Project (Benton Harbor, Michigan)

 

Building Better Urban Housing and Creating Employment Opportunity

Genesis by Champion modular construction was chosen for a Hope VI urban redevelopment project that included building 64 one- and two-story homes within 8 months to replace an apartment complexd which was deemed unlivable.

 

Hope VI is a national initiative to eliminate severely distressed public housing.

  • 1,248 sq.-ft. to 1,768 sq.-ft.
  • 64  one- and two-story Genesis modular residences to be built within eight months
  • Residences installed at a rate of three to four per week
  • Modular construction quickly replaced housing for temporarily displaced residents

Quickly build and deliver replacement housing for displaced residents

Solution

  • To assist displaced families, Genesis Homes developed an intensive, four-week apprentice program to provide construction skills to candidates in rough framing, drywall finishing, siding and roofing
  • The first four graduates helped install the initial Genesis home and were placed in jobs within a month of "graduation"
